A dwelling, an history

The Auterive manufacture was created in the XVIIIth century by Jean Marcassus, a rich tradesman native of Toulouse, encouraged and subsidised by the Languedoc States for the manufacturing of luxury fabric aiming at competing with the English goods in the Ports of the Levant. This Auterive establishment was erected as a royal manufacture in 1726 and Marcassus was ennobled by Louis the XVth in 1744 and received the title of baron of Puymaurin.
The Manufacturing stopped at the end of the XVIIIth century and the residence was transformed into a dwelling place.
Doctor Jules Basset acquired it in 1896, so it came into the family, six generations ago.
In 1997, in order to receive guests, the bedrooms situated on the first floor were restored and equipped with comfortable private bathrooms.
The Manufacture has kept all its character and authenticity, displaying very spacious rooms with their XVIIIth and XIXth century decoration and furniture. It has also kept precious testimonies of its past:
  • the old rinsing basins, judiciously converted into a swimming-pool,

  • the old well with its noria,

  • the magnificent dining-room and the 1805 panoramic wall paper in the lounge,

  • the huge old kitchen with its spit, bread oven, coal stove, terra-cotta sink and copper pans…

  • the monumental staircase leading to the upper rooms will make you discover the ancestors' gallery and, further on, are displayed collections of books and various medical instruments and objects that belonged to this family of doctors…
